Simulation on demand for FOBOHA (Switzerland) AG

Project

Advaltech FOBOHA (Switzerland) AG develops, designs and manufactures high-performance molds. The tool surface temperature is controlled using cooling and heating channels with specific temperature evolutions over time. For an injection mold with different fluid circuit layout, the time dependent temperature development on the tool surface will be investigated and optimized with a computational fluid dynamics analysis.

Solution

With a transient CFD Analysis in ANSYS CFX, the complete mold flow process will be reproduced. After closing the mold tool, two different plastics are injected and cooled in sequence. Hence, the heat flux in-between the cooling circuit and the tool is simulated. Main focus is placed on the examination of the tool surface to analyze the cooling-down and solidification of the plastic. Different designs are compared and proved on temperature homogeneity and the reaction time of the surface temperature. Caused by the temperature differences of about 120° Celsius, great thermal expansion is leading to stresses in the part. They are calculated transiently in ANSYS Mechanical and evaluated.

Customer Benefit

With the transient CFD Analysis, the company advaltech FOBOHA received accurate information about temperature distribution with focus on the mold surface. The most efficient design could be demonstrated. Although, the influences of different circuit layouts were shown and understood.
A homogenous distribution will support a faster injectioncooling loop and generate a smoother material distribution.
