ANSYS 17 – The most important news at a glance

With the simple formula „10x“ ANSYS.Inc summarizes the convincing outcome of the intensive development efforts for the new version ANSYS 17.0 released at the end of January 2016.

These include new tools such as the topology optimization for shape-finding, the import of Layout data for the thermo-mechanical fatigue simulation of electronics or the use of Modelica and FMI (Functional Mock-Up Interfaces) for system simulations. Furthermore this includes the development of the existing functionalities focusing in depth on the illustration of physical effects for example by new material models for geo-mechanics or composite or mapping the magnetic fields of permanent magnets.

Of course an improvement in efficiency both in the pre-processing as well as in the solution is more important element of the advancements of ANSYS. This includes for example the multi-body simulation with elastic bodies, the simultaneous computation of multiple time steps in transient magnetic field calculations or the selective control of the time steps in CFD-Analyses for solid body and fluid.

In addition, few products are redesigned according to the licensing. Besides more compact license structure with Mechanical Pro, Mechanical Premium and Mechanical Enterprise in the mechanical the flagship products get ANSYS Mechanical Enterprise, ANSYS Q3D Extractor and ANSYS Maxwell 3D, plus the Multiphysics bundles, access to the full functionality of the ANSYS Simplorer. “ANSYS Simplorer Entry“ which is an integrated version in the flagship products differentiates itself from the full development level “ANSYS Simplorer Advanced“merely through the number of objects that can be simulated and enables to verify the interactionof 3D simulated components with associated controls or to build complete systems.

All ANSYS Mechanical Enterprise users can utilize their license from version 17.1 to use ANSYS AIM Pro alternatively. Therefore the complete consideration of all physical domains,even queries related to fluid mechanics and electromagnetics are feasible. With the new intuitive interface of AIM and the possibility to automate the working process through simulation templates, new user groups (designer, production engineer) can benefit from the advantages of better product and process understanding.

    Installation Information



    Downloading the software can be done as usual via ANSYS Customer Portal:

    For new customers creating a user login is necessary before downloading. For this registration the current customer number is required.

    To download the ANSYS software we recommend downloading the ISO images. With this download option you get all the data and you don’t have to assemble individual modules to an installation archive. Burning DVD is not required because the loaded ISO-Images unzip themselves with appropriate tools like 7-Zip, WinRAR etc. Please do NOT use the Windows owned Zip utility or WinZip because these may not unzip the Images properly. The individual ISO-Images must be unzipped always in a particular folder to avoid overwriting the files with same name.

    For the electromagnetic products like ANSYS Maxwell, ANSYS Simplorer, ANSYS Slwave and others Installation packages (Zip-Archive) are separately available on ANSYS Customer Portal.

    Licensing Information

    Prior to upgrading to the version 17.0 ensure that all the existing license server systems are updated to the new release. Please note that only 64bit- operating systems are supported. The list of officially supported license server operating systems includes:

    • Windows7 (Professional & Enterprise) / Windows 8.1 (Professional & Enterprise) / Windows 10 (Professional & Enterprise)
    • Windows HPC  Server 2008 R2 / Windows Server 2012 R2
    • RedHat Enterprise Linux (64-bit) 6.5/6.6 und SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3/SP4

    Further Information:


    After the update process of the license server from v16 to v17 has changed insignificantly to Build-Dates the notes from the following document can be used:


    In the dual license server (ANSOFT-LIC and ANSYS-LIC on a machine) the Ansoft-License Manager is terminated during the installation and the Ansoft-License is copied in the new directory of the ANSYS Licensing (license_files). The Ansoft-License is released after a successful update by ANSYS-License server. Please note that after this change both licenses are available under the port of ANSYS-License server.

    After this update (redirect.lic) an adjustment of the Client License Preference is required for the Ansoft-Products (EM Suite).


    In addition, before this License server update please check if your license key is suitable for this use. Here the release-date of new version 17.0 must be before the maintenance expiry date of corresponding License increments. After the version 17.0 supports merely a TRL-Licensing (temper resistant licensing) the license key must have a required “SIGN2-Key” in every increment (see example).

    Please note that the feature ANSYS Mechanical appears as ANSYS Mechanical Enterprise after updating the license server (v17) in the license preferences (analogous to ANSYS Mechanical PrepPost and ANSYS Mechanical Solver). With this change afresh selection of this new product name for example “ANSYS Mechanical Enterprise” is required in the solver settings of Mechanical Editor (essential default setting for Remote Solve Manager).

    By ordering a maintenance renewal the ASC (ANSYS Support Coordinator) will automatically receive an updated license file. If required please contact our contract department: After each maintenance renewal the received license files must be imported in order to ensure an availability of current licenses and the compatibility with newer ANSYS versions.

    In case you would like to change license server you can request the new license in ANSYS Customer Portal under “License Management” -> “License Server Change”. Please note that the Online Server Change can work exclusively through ANSYS Support Coordinator (ASC).
